Chicks improve in Clinton scrimmage

In their final warmup ahead of the 2013 season, Chickasha showed a fair amount of improvement against Clinton Thursday night.

"It was a pretty even game," Cobble said. "We improved since the Blanchard game. I thought our intensity was better."

The Fightin' Chicks took the opportunity to do some tinkering with their team, and one move on the defensive side of the ball was productive.

"We moved two of our deep backs, Lindbergh Carey and Evan Copeland, up to linebacker, and that proved to be a good decision," Cobble said. "It helped us out a lot and gives us more speed in the outside linebacker position."

Should Chickasha choose to go with this setup in future games, it is likely Copeland and Carey would flank senior linebacker T.J. Filer, who brings more strength and power to the middle of the defense.

On top of improved intensity, Cobble said the players began to display a better understanding of the offensive system, which involves multiple options. Cobble said fullback Josh Lathan and running back Tresjon Davis "worked well together" to move the offense down the field and set up a touchdown.

Starting quarterback Cade Morris showed his versatility with a 65 yard passing touchdown and later a 35 yard run into the end zone.

With less than a week to go until the season opener, Cobble said the team is just about ready to take on rivals Anadarko on Friday.

"We need to spend more time on our kicking game; we haven't worked on that as much," Cobble said. "Then it's down to just polishing everything else up. You need to play the opener as clean as you can."
