Lady Chicks suffer first loss to Elgin

CHICKASHA — In their toughest test yet, the Chickasha girls basketball team lost the battle of the unbeaten to Elgin 52-44 Tuesday night at home.

The Lady Chicks (3-1) were led by the collective effort of Alex Stewart, Dominique Golightly and Jacklyn Ramos, who all scored 13 points.

Despite the 6’ 3” Gentry Holt proving to be a lot to handle down low, it was from the outside where Elgin did most of their damage in the first half. With the Lady Chicks squeezing the post, it left players like Samantha Gribb wide open on the perimeter. This made the Lady Owls a double-threat for the rest of the game, and it put them in the ascendency.

Chickasha stuck to trying to work the ball in down low to 6’ 4” Taylor Sylvester, but with Holt blocking her path it forced Sylvester further out. The buckets weren’t falling there, and slowly Elgin built their lead. It was 11-9 by the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Owls dominated the second frame. A 10-0 run from the start was only stopped by a Jacklyn Ramos three-pointer midway through the quarter. By then, Chickasha’s main scoring threat, Stewart, found herself in foul trouble and had to sit for the rest of the half. Elgin ended it shooting 5-11 from three-point range and up 29-18.

They extended that lead to as much as 16 before the Lady Chicks began to claw back into the game. Ramos’ third three-pointer of the night brought Chickasha back within nine as they looked to mount a comeback. But Holt got going, and two quick made shots plus the foul kept Chickasha at bay.
