Lady Chicks lose to Guthrie again

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School girls basketball team only lost by five points the last time it played Guthrie, on Jan. 12 in the Chickasha Basketball Classic.

In Friday’s rematch, it appeared Guthrie learned more from that game than Chickasha did, as the Blue Jays beat the Lady Chicks (7-10) 56-41.

Guthrie’s patient offense against Chickasha’s zone led to three 3-pointers from Micayla Haynes in the second quarter, and the Chicks’ zone eventually opened up for Guthrie layups in the second half.

Haynes scored 12 points for Guthrie in the second quarter, with the Blue Jays swinging the ball back and forth with quick perimeter passes until Chickasha’s rotations came just a second late.

Still, Chickasha trailed by only six points at halftime after Kieley Clift got a steal and a layup just before the buzzer. Clift led Chickasha with 17 points in the game.

But while Chickasha limited Guthrie’s inside field goals in the first half, the lane opened up to Guthrie’s guards for drive-and-dish layups, possibly a result of the Lady Chicks adjusting to the 3-point threat.

Guthrie’s lead grew to double-figures in the third quarter, and remained there for the rest of the game.

Chickasha struggled shooting the ball in the fourth quarter, and most of the Lady Chicks’ points in the final period came from free throws by Dominique Golightly, who scored five in the fourth quarter and 12 points in the game.

The Lady Chicks are scheduled to play El Reno at home Tuesday. They beat the Lady Indians 48-46 in El Reno on Jan. 29.
