Chicks drop first game at Millwood tourney

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Chickasha High School girls basketball team lost to Mount St. Mary in the first round of the 3rd annual Millwood Falcon Invitational tournament Thursday morning at Millwood Field House.

The Lady Chicks lost the game 54-30, and their record dropped to 1-2 this season after the loss.

The Lady Rockets scored the first 12 points of the game, forcing Chickasha turnovers with a full-court zone press.

Mount St. Mary got two offensive rebounds on its first possession, and forced Chickasha into turnovers on two of the first three possessions, leading to a quick Lady Chicks timeout just a minute into the game.

Chickasha scored its first points with 2:06 left in the first quarter when Alex Stewart hit two free throws. Maddy Irving scored on a short jump shot with 45 seconds left in the first, and the score at the end of the quarter was 14-4.

The second quarter went much better for the Lady Chicks. They played tighter defense, and appeared less bothered by St. Mary's pressure defense.

The two teams played to a 13-13 tie in the second quarter, and went into the halftime locker rooms with the Lady Rockets up 27-17.

"I think we just kind of woke up a little bit," head coach Christy Edelen said. "Playing at 10 'o clock in the morning, you just never know how you're going to react to that. We haven't done that in a long time."

Chickasha scored the first basket of the third quarter to cut the deficit to eight points, but Mount St. Mary went on a 10-1 run after that to force a Chickasha timeout with the score at 37-20.

Even when the Chickasha guards were able to break the press and get into the half court offense, St. Mary's perimeter defense was forcing them to initiate their offense far outside the 3-point line, making it difficult for the Lady Chicks to run their set plays.

St. Mary led 45-23 at the end of the third quarter, and Chickasha played its reserves for most of the fourth quarter, with the game out of reach and the next round of the tournament to be played the next day.

"Mount St. Mary has a very good team, and it just got away from us," Edelen said. "We played a great second quarter, and my goal was that we would beat them in the third quarter, cut it to six or to four, and then have a chance in the fourth quarter. But we started the second half with a few good possessions and then lost it again."

The Lady Chicks will play the loser between Del City and Ardmore at 1 p.m. Friday in the consolation bracket at the Millwood Field House.
