Alex thumps OCA to remain unbeaten

ALEX —

Alex kept their unbeaten streak rolling Friday, ahead of the storms rolling in, with a 54-8 win over Oklahoma Christian Academy.

Alex ((5-0) won the game on a mercy rule. The rout was foreshadowed early with a fumble on the opening kickoff by OCA, which was recovered by Alex senior Michael Wilcox. On Alex’s first drive sophomore Kyle Thornburg had a good run, but the Longhorns had to wait a little longer for the opening score as the Eagles defense held firm.

Running back Caleb Powell started the Eagles first drive with a good run, the Longhorn defense swarmed the running backs in the backfield and deflected a pass to have the ball turned over on downs.

The following drive Alex started off with some runs off tackle to Thornburg and Senior Jose Ochoa. Thornburg set up a first and goal with a long run and then ran the ball in to give Alex their first touchdown.

In the second quarter the Longhorns mixed up the pass and the run with a deep throw caught by junior Jacob Otey. Alex then stuck to the ground where Ochoa scored Alex’s second touchdown after a long run and making an expert cut to avoid the tackler.

Midway through the second quarter, Eagles junior Nathaniel Carter caught a deep pass, reaching out with just one hand to secure the ball and swing momentum in OCA's direction. Powell had a long run which helped set up his touchdown on a fourth down conversion.

On a later OCA drive, Alex's defense took to the spotlight with an interception. The Longhorns drove the ball all the way down into the red zone, but a fumble recovered by the Eagles kept the home side from extending its lead.

Early in the third quarter, sophomore quarterback Dalton Alcorn went to the air once again with a touchdown pass to Otey. The Longhorn offense quickly got another crack at the end zone when OCA fumbled the ball which the Longhorns recover. That led to another passing touchdown for Alex.

Things went from bad to worse for the Eagles on their next drive as another fumble recovered by Alex led another passing touchdown for Alcorn; this time to senior Ryland Ketchum.

On the Alex drive that sealed the game, Ochoa had a long run on second down that set up Thornburg for his second touchdown of the night.

Next on the Longhorns' schedule is a trip to Allen this Friday.
