Alex drops out of playoffs, optimistic about future

ALEX — The Alex High School football fell short to the Garber Wolverines on Friday night in the first round of the Class B state playoffs at Alex Stadium.

Garber walked away with a 46-16 win and advanced to the next round.

The two teams went back and forth in the first half. Freshman Kyler Thornburg gave the Longhorns their first touchdown of the night in the second quarter. Alex converted the two-point conversion, the Longhorns led the game 8-6.

Garber found open space to score a touchdown in response, making the game 12-8.

Shortly after, with 3:44 left to go in the first half, the Longhorns scored another touchdown taking back the lead to 16-12.

Alex fell short on defense, allowing Garber's offense to find a hole and take the lead back again, making the game 20-16 with 45 seconds left before half.

After the second half began, the Longhorns lost momentum.

"We came out in the second half and had a fumble right there," Longhorns head coach Matt Brand said. "They got the ball back and scored and that took all the momentum away."

The Longhorns failed to answer any of Garber's additional 26 points.

"You know we were sitting with a little easier team this week and that is kind of the focal point of our season," Brand said. "I hate to put it on one game but that kind of killed us."

Although this is the end of the season for the Alex Longhorns, Coach Brand remains optimistic about the future.

"You know we've got a lot of young players. Both running backs playing aren't even 16 years old, they're going against 18-year-olds," Brand said. "That's just inspiration for next year, they know what they did wrong. We've got to rebound from that. Our seniors did a great job, but fortunately for us in the future we only have two on the field tonight. So we are really a young team. We have a strong freshman class and they haven't lost a junior high game in two years. We're really looking at a bright future."
