In the Saddle with Assistant Coach Ken Richardson

CHICKASHA — The Drover softball players expected a smooth transition as the season began, but a few injuries later, the team was just trying to stay healthy enough to continue to season.

Ending at 26-26, assistant coach Ken Richardson said he was proud of the way the players continued to fight, work hard and endure a less-than-ideal season.

“Right off the bat, we lose a player. Then we started in a spring and lose another one in a key spot for us,” Richardson said. “But we survived. I’m proud of the girls, and they did a good job.”

With injuries, Richardson and Coach Jadyn Wallis had to keep the players motivated and excited to play.

“Most of them were seniors and they knew how to get through things but we pushed them to get where they needed and not dwell on what happened,” he said.

Through it all, five players were named All-Conference with Brooke McLeod, Ashley Rasovic, Taylor Smith, Katie Jirak and Chelsea Zuchnik earning the honors.

With three of those players and two other seniors leaving after this year, the coaches have been working to bring in new players to fill the spots.

“Coach Wallis is doing a good job of recruiting,” Richardson said. “When she’s here and established herself a couple of years, I think she will do a good job. And the kids coming in, I think they will help us out.”

Drover fans can watch the interview with Coach Ken Richardson at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday on local Channel 18.
