Chickasha ladies top first-placed Bridge Creek

In their toughest test this season, the Chickasha girls overcame local rivals Bridge Creek 2-1 to take local bragging rights and, more importantly, the top spot in 4A District 2.

The Lady Bobcats had been undefeated up until Lady Chicks leading goal scorer Taylor Lessig dispatched the game winner with less than ten minutes remaining. The win keeps Chickasha undefeated in district with two games remaining.

The opening minutes of the first half did not start well for the Lady Chicks. Bridge Creek attacked early, testing the Chickasha back line on multiple occasions. The attacks were repelled, and  Chickasha managed to spend most of the first period on their opponent’s side of the pitch. But they had their own issues getting good looks at the net.

Their first attempt came early on with a pass from just outside the penalty box by left winger Tara Arnold to forward Katie Hinch, but the goalkeeper prevented the attack from connecting. A poorly-timed foul took another chance away from them.

The second half the offense for the Chicks began finding their way into attacking range, but their attackers were indecisive with their shots. Both Myala Carmargo and Tara Arnold found themselves in scoring positions, but hesitated and defenders closed in on both attacks. Shortly after these two drives toward the goa,l a defensive lapse found Chickasha down one after a goal for the Lady Bobcats.

Chickasha continued to keep the intensity up by moving the ball into the attacking third. This persistence paid off when the Bridge Creek goalkeeper dropped the ball after a corner kick. The kick went straight to midfielder Amanda Black, who put the ball past the keeper to put Chickasha back into the game.

With less than ten minutes remaining, Chickasha put one final attack together to win the game. After a through ball from the midfield to Carmargo, she dished the ball to the right side after drawing two defenders in and the open Lessig put the ball to the far right of the keeper.
