Titans avenge earlier loss with win at CHS

Carl Albert came to Chickasha with a bit of revenge in mind, and duly took it.

The Titans, who suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Chickasha earlier this season, never really looked like repeating history on Friday as they left the Fighin’ Chicks with a () loss to carry into regionals next week. With a tough night in Noble to get past and playoffs around the corner, the Fightin’ Chicks rotated through three pitchers, but Carl Albert fought through it all in the rescheduled 5A Shootout championship game, moved from McAlester last Sunday due to rain.

Although in their home ballpark, Chickasha were considered the visitors in this game. They fell 2-0 down after the bottom of the first inning, with a run being walked in and Gavin LaValley crossing home plate on a fielders’ choice.

With the shaky start, junior Mario Medina was called in from the bull pen with just a third of an inning gone.

Chickasha pulled one back in the second. Jake Womack’s bunt down the left field line with two on loaded the bases for Brandon Shumway. Although he hit into a double play, it was enough for the RBI to bring Derek Sullivan across and halve the lead.

The Titans restored the two run advantage with one in the bottom half of that inning. When they came to Elliott Field the first time this season, Chickasha did well to keep power-hitter Gavin LaValley from doing much at the plate. This time around, he was sure to leave a mark.

LaValley took Medina’s pitch over the left field fence to leadoff the third inning for a solo home run. That essentially put the game beyond all doubt, although Riley Cabral scored another as Kadell Nguyen hit into a double play in the sixth.

The Fightin' Chicks actually out-hit Carl Albert 5-3 for the game, but left seven base runners stranded, unable to string together enough hits in succession. The middle order, once again, provided the offense, with Sullivan and Womack hitting 2-for-3 while Tresjon Davis went 1-for-2 with his double in the sixth.
