In each class, players and coaches are now at the point where they can count the amount of teams left in the postseason one pair of hands.
Two of those fingers represent teams from the Grady County area. Class 3A champs Blanchard will make a long trip up to Tulsa where Lincoln Christian awaits them in a quarterfinal matchup tonight. Alex is even closer to glory as they face Pond Creek-Hunter in a Class B semifinal to be held at neutral Stillwater HS in a big semifinal.
The Lions enter their game on a full head of steam after easily disposing of Newcastle 41-0 in one of the few games not postponed due to weather last Friday. Braden Stringer's four unanswered touchdown runs on an icy field put the game beyond the Racers' reach well before halftime. In this week's game, however, Blanchard may find themselves looking in a mirror.
Lincoln Christian's Justin Flewellan, a VYPE Top 100 running back, has been a crucial part of his team's offense this season, racking up more than 1,700 yards of rushing on 258 carries and 18 touchdowns. Keeping him under wraps will be crucial to the state champions moving onto the semifinals.
After entering on a 6-4 record, the Bulldogs have been on a tear in the postseason, most notably knocking off undefeated Victory Christian 27-26 in the round of 16.
In Class B, Alex is on the doorstep to a state title game, but must first overcome P.C.-Hunter. The Panthers beat undefeated Wetumka easily 54-14 to advance to this round, and there's no doubting Alex has a difficult task ahead.
The Longhorns have been spreading around the wealth lately. After quarterback Dalton Alcorn's outstanding game against Ringwood, Jose Ochoa picked up the torch and ran for 200 yards and three touchdowns last week. Anyone could show up for Alex in Stillwater tonight.
