Oliver, Young heading to McPherson College in Kansas

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School football team will be sending two receivers to McPherson College in Kansas next season.

Shaq Oliver and Deshawn Young both signed letters of intent to attend McPherson on Tuesday morning in the Chickasha High School library.

Oliver and Young were the No. 1 and 2 receivers on the CHS football team in their senior seasons.

Young will likely play defensive back for McPherson, majoring in business, and said a coach from the college visited for the first time in late December.

"He talked to us and was telling us about his college and how much they had done," Young said. "They said they were really interested in me and wanted me to come play. I checked it out, and I liked it."

Young and Oliver visited the school together, and the impression the players and coaches made on them made their decision clear.

"The speeches the football players had out there made me believe that anyone can make it to college," Oliver said. "Yeah, it's hard, but there are a lot of people that can help you there. They just made me feel like I should be there."

Oliver said the players at McPherson talked about the quality of living in Kansas, and that many of them stayed past college.

"They talked about having family, and a lot of the players that go there stay in Kansas because they love it so much," Oliver said.

Oliver will play receiver for the football team, and also plans to join the track and field team as a high jumper. Oliver is preparing for the state meet this weekend in Yukon.

McPherson college is an NAIA school coached by Pete Sterbick. The football program started in 1920, and plays in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs have won three conference championships, most recently in 2010, and has made NAIA playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010.

"They told us about their history," Young said. "They've got a winning program, they've got commitment, and they have coaches that want to win and develop players."
