Clash of softball titans ends with Lady Chicks on top

CHICKASHA —

Softball giants met at Elkouri Field yesterday, but it was one of the smallest members of either squad that made the biggest difference.

Tawn Neidy launched a hit between left and center in the bottom of the sixth inning to bring in two runs for Chickasha, setting them up to win 5-2 against Lawton MacArthur. It ensured the Lady Chicks, 8-0 and the second ranked team in the state, got past a tough opponent in MacArthur. The Highlanders are ranked number three.

"It felt great for my team," Neidy said after the game.

After seven games of mostly dominating their opponents, the win over MacArthur is big for a Lady Chicks team that is looking for an elusive state title. Head coach Dennis Furr knows how important it is to beat the Highlanders; it's the team he coached and won titles with before switching to Chickasha.

"They're a good team," Furr said. "Their pitcher doesn't fit us well, because we like ones that throw a little harder. We got the hits, just not always when we needed them. We got one at a good time. I thought they played very well; our defense and pitching was great."
