Lawton-MacArthur took a winning record in district out of their contest with Chickasha Friday night, coming out on top in a shootout 56-21.
On Lawton-Mac's (4-2) opening drive of the game their high tempo offense was running the spread to perfection and made it to the Chickasha (3-3) three yard line. The Chicks defense was able to hold them to a field goal.
Chickasha was held on their opening drive and had to punt it away. The Highlanders took advantage of the momentum and scored on a 26-yard screen pass to Kehazborn West from quarterback Will Collins, followed by a successful two-point conversion to lead the Chicks 11-0.
Fightin Chicks quarterback Cade Morris, who is known more for his running, connected to receiver Montana Stonecalf on a 32-yard pass to put the Chicks in Highlander territory on the next drive. However, the Chicks fumbled on Lawton-Mac’s 37-yard line and gave the ball back to the Highlanders, who made them pay. After recovering a fumble on their own 37 yard line, The Highlanders took the ball 63 yards to score on an 11-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Will Collins to receiver Jacques Henderson.
The Chicks looked like they were going to put a drive together after getting a few first downs, but went three and out once again and had to punt it away. Collins scrambled for 24 yards to put the Highlanders just inside the Chicks goal-line, setting up a touchdown run on a sweep by Delon James. Chickasha’s special teams showed some fight, blocking the extra-point.
With five minutes to go in the first half, the Fightin’ Chicks were able to gain some momentum after a 65-yard touchdown connection to receiver Taray Thomas from quarterback Cade Morris tmade the score 23-7 in favor of the Highlanders. Lawton MacArthur answered with a 65-yard touchdown drive that took four and a half minutes off the clock, making the score 29-7 at the half.
