Walters trumps Minco surge to win district

CENTRAL HIGH — The Minco girls will have to navigate the consolation bracket of the regional tournament they host next week after losing 58-36 to Walters in the district final.

The Lady Devils claimed the crown despite a third quarter comeback that saw Minco take the deficit from 11 points to just two in the space of a few minutes. Hannah High led the floor with 19 points and kept Walters well ahead in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Both teams pressed heavily to start the game, and Minco in particular was aggressive, picking up a lot of fouls while trying to wrestle possession back. They were successful on a few occasions in the first half and could have kept things closer, but too many shots did not fall, leaving chances squandered.

Two threes from Natalie Blevins at the start of the third quarter sparked a 10-1 run for Minco. Blevins, Kaytlin Rowell and Cheyenne Terry all finished on eight points each to lead the team.

Despite Terry and Rowell penetrating the lane numerous times, they weren’t able to sink enough shots. Walters used their size to make things difficult for Minco, forcing midrange jumpers and three pointers that just weren’t falling on this night.

The loss means Minco now has to win the consolation bracket to advance to area, and they start regional play on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
