Rattled with injuries and a short staff, the Drover softball team took a little longer than expected to get their stride, but junior Markie LaFerney says that part of the season is behind them.
“We played a lot of our conference games toward the beginning and a lot of people didn’t have to do that. That was when everybody was coming out really strong … and that’s when we were struggling,” she said. “We were trying to make adjustments and they were all ready to go.”
With that being said, LaFerney and the rest of the team are confident going into the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament the first weekend in May.
“We definitely look forward to the conference tournament because we know that everyone in our conference is beatable,” she said. “I think it will be better now that we haven’t played any of those teams in a while and now that we are going into the conference tournament, I feel like we’re going to be fresh and they’re not.”
LaFerney had the opportunity to graduate early and had a difficult time in settling on the decision but ultimately decided to stick around another year to play the sport she loves and to graduate with teammates with whom she came into the program.
“A little bit was, I don’t want to regret it later in life now that I have the opportunity,” she said. “I thought that will make my senior year better, so I rather have it like that, and actually have a Senior Day and all that fun stuff.”
Drover fans can watch the interview with Markie LaFerney at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday on local Channel 18.
