Chickasha victorious on opening day of Washita Classic

CHICKASHA —

After defeat to Duncan in the away part of their series on Tuesday, Chickasha was looking to bounce back in opening their home tournament.

They did so on Thursday in a big way. The Fightin' Chicks (7-1) run ruled Western Heights 11-1 in just the fourth inning of the first game in a double-header in the Washita Valley Classic. A four-run third was their biggest single-inning haul and put them well beyond reach.

It came down to some solid hitting, but also from some poor pitching on the Jets' part. Five Chickasha batters total were hit and four were walked. Derek Sullivan initiated the run-rule when he reached home on a wild pitch.

Chickasha opened the scoring at the first time asking. Luke Dixon got a leadoff walk, stole second and third before he was brought in. Derek Sullivan got the sacrifice fly when his deep shot to center was snagged by Kelby Staley on the run back toward the wall. It left Sullivan a bit surprised, but he still got the RBI.

After a three up, three down for the Jets in the second, Jake Womack doubled Chickasha’s lead with an RBI single that brought in Brooks Bush. Bush, once again, exemplified the Fightin’ Chicks deep roster of speedy base runners by stealing both second and third before Womack dropped his hit into right center.

A double from Cade Morris brought two more runs in from Brandon Shumway and Dixon.

Starting pitcher Alex Ingram then got into a little trouble in the third. A leadoff single from Cory Smith, an error and a walk had the bases loaded for Western Heights. Smith crossed when a pitch got away from catcher Brooks Bush.

Dixon stepped in to catch Stanley's line drive to second before quickly throwing to Sullivan at short to catch Juan Nuñez off the bag, which eased the pressure.
