Ninnekah basketball competed in the Longhorn Classic in Alex over the weekend, and the boys and girls teams had their tournament end in opposite fashion.
The boys ended a difficult few days with a big 65-36 win over Paoli on Saturday morning. The Owls had three players score in double-digits, with Blake Daggs and Cody Chaney tied to lead the team with 14 points. Clay Chaney scored 10 points.
Ninnekah showed intent from the start, outscoring the Pugs 22-2 in the first quarter. They went on to score 20 more points in the second to take a 29 point lead into halftime.
Braxton East tried his best to keep Paoli in the game, scoring a game-high 17 points and completing a double-double with 12 rebounds. The Pugs actually outscored Ninnekah 14-11 in the third quarter, but it was never enough to mount a serious comeback. Paoli shot 22 percent from the floor, while Ninnekah made 45 percent of their shots.
The Lady Owls battled away in a much closer game, but fell short 57-41 against Stratford. The Lady Bulldogs leapt out to early leads in both the first and second quarters.
Stratford can credit their win mostly to Cheyennne Weast, who scored a game-high 30 points, more than half of the Lady Bulldogs' total, against Ninnekah. She also led the team in rebounds with six.
Rayna Dinsmore led for Ninnekah with 10 points, while Erin Cheek and Ciara Garrett contributed nine each. Dinsmore also led in rebounds with seven. The Lady Owls had 24 turnovers in the loss, undermining any comeback effort.
