Dibble, Verden win big in Grady consolation game

AMBER — Girls’ final

The Dibble girls took some silverware home from their trip to Grady County by beating Minco 43-38 in the girls’ consolation final.

The young Lady Demon team – sophomore Anatasia Cardio is their oldest player – lifted the first trophy of Championship Saturday with freshmen Brooke James and Augusta Duty both on 18 points to lead the floor.

Minco went into the fourth quarter only down by four but suddenly went cold on their attempt at a comeback. Cheyenne Terry led the Lady Bulldogs with 12 points.

Corey Phelps’ layup off a backside cut with minutes remaining brought Minco within two points of Dibble, but a three from Emma Hayhurst put the Lady Demons back on top and allowed them to run out the clock.

Boys’ final

Verden stormed to the boys’ consolation championship with a 71-54 win over hosts Amber-Pocasset.

Tryston Morgan was unstoppable, with 29 points

Hunter Morgan was off to an immediate start. Two buckets from beyond the arc and a couple of foul shots gave him eight points in just the first quarter as the Tigers took a nine point lead out of the opening frame.

In stark contrast, Am-Po couldn’t get anything to fall in the first. The Tiger’s man defense made space hard to come by. Kennedy found his game as the minutes went on, dominating the low block. His 13 points in the first half kept the Panthers within reach. Kennedy ended the game on 21 points to lead the team.

They couldn’t stop the other Morgan, Tryston, at the defensive end, though. Normally finding his buckets by driving hard to the lane, Verden supplied their point guard from the wing for a few mid-range jumpers when he found space inside the perimeter. Inside defending was a struggle for the Panthers, and Verden used that to extend their lead to 11, 33-23, by halftime.
