Lady Chicks break losing streak

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School girls basketball team finally got rewarded for its hard work with a win, beating Duncan High School in the first round of the Chickasha Basketball Classic on Thursday night.

The Lady Chicks won the game 62-43, and advanced their record to 5-6 this season, also breaking a four-game losing streak.

"We needed that," head coach Christy Edelen said. "Needed that, needed that, needed that. We kind of switched things up to motivate a little bit. Everybody kind of stepped up and rose to the challenge."

Kieley Clift and Sierra Hamilton led the Lady Chicks with 15 points each, and Hamilton dominated the boards with 17 total, 10 on offense.

Dominique Golightly scored 12 points and had six steals, and Taylor Sylvester scored 10 points, all in the fourth quarter. Maddy Irving had seven points.

Chickasha started the game off in a high-pressure 1-2-2 trapping zone, which forced Duncan into turnovers on the Lady Demons' first seven possessions.

The Lady Chicks led 14-3 after the first quarter, although they let up defensively some in the second period.

"I wish we would've played better defense, that's just kind of my thing," Edelen said. "It was not very good at times tonight, but it was good at times. We'll take the win. We just needed the win."

Duncan made it a 26-21 game at halftime, but Chickasha extended the lead again in the third quarter and kept it for the rest of the game.

Chickasha played a different starting lineup Thursday night, partially due to Alex Stewart's injury and partially because Edelen wanted to change things up some.

Freshman Kelsi Gore and sophomore Brooklin Burns started the game, along with normal starters Golightly, Hamilton and Clift.

The Lady Chicks played Lawton MacArthur in the second round Friday night. The winner of that game plays in the championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday, and the loser plays in the third-place game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
