Chickasha basketball starts 2013 with road losses at Carl Albert

— The Chickasha High School boys basketball team had its four-game winning streak broken Friday night at Carl Albert High School.

The Fightin' Chicks lost the game 71-57, and are now 4-2 this season after losing to the No. 1 Titans.

"They came out and got us down 14-4, and it just kind of stayed like that the rest of the game," head coach Bryan Merritt said. "I think it got up to 16 at one point, and then down to nine maybe."

Carl Albert's depth and pace of play caused Chickasha, which relies on a small rotation, to become tired.

"They play a lot of guys, and it kind of just wore us down depth-wise," Merritt said. "We got pretty tired. They pressed us the whole game."

Despite the pressure, Chickasha only turned the ball over 17 times, which Merritt said wasn't terrible considering the style of play. However, the press did limit Chickasha's ability to call set half-court plays.

"It kind of takes calling plays out of it, because as soon as E.J. [Golightly] gets the ball, he's getting trapped," Merritt said.

Golightly was Chickasha's leading scorer with 21 points. Datious Dufur scored 15 points, and Joey Sylvester had 12.

The Fightin' Chicks will face a very different style of play tonight against Piedmont at home.

"Piedmont will be a different type of game," Merritt said. "They're 7-2, but they're more of a physical, half-court type of team. They like playing in the 50s."

Merritt said it would be good if his team could push the pace against Piedmont, but several factors determine how Chickasha plays on a given night.

"You'd like to [push the pace] if you had depth," Merritt said. "Basically every game for us is going to be a lot different. It depends on if we get in foul trouble, or how tired we get, or if we get into a zone. They're probably the most physical team we'll play, other than someone we might run into in the tournament."
