Drovers set to name new coach

CHICKASHA —

Almost two months after head coach for 22 years Brisco McPherson announced his retirement from Drovers men's basketball, the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) appears to be closer to revealing his successor.

A search committee has been combing over candidates to fill McPherson's shoes since he retired in April. The university cannot release the names of those they have been in contact with, Jessica Jackson, USAO interim director of media & community relations, said.

However, a new coach should be named in the next few days.

"We expect to be able to release an answer by the end of next week," Jackson said.

McPherson, who is also the USAO athletic director, decided to step down after racking up 309 wins to make him the winningest and one of the most revered coaches in USAO athletics. He took the team to their first ever and so far only national championship in the 2001-02 season and saw them make the NAIA national tournament three consecutive times.

A member of the inaugural 1973-76 USAO men's basketball team, McPherson is not part of the committee that will choose his successor, Jackson said.

Speculation that current assistant coach Vinson Metcalf cannot be confirmed, Jackson said, as the names of candidates cannot be released.

"We're limited in what we can legally say," Jackson said. "The hiring process is still ongoing and applications are still being looked at."

McPherson's successor will get about five months to transition into the job before the Drovers season begins in early November.
