The 2013 part of Chickasha's wrestling season ended on a bit of a high for the team, as they placed second at the Anadarko Christmas Classic over the weekend.
The Fightin' Chicks were just beaten out in the bout for the top spot by Harrah. The tournament saw Chickasha's top wrestlers continue their fantastic seasons so far, while others new to the mat received some valuable experience.
"It was a good tournament especially for our young wrestlers," head coach Chad Randle said. "We got a lot of matches in the pool format and gained some valuable experience.
Seniors Josh Latham and Triston Hill continued their undefeated runs. Latham took the 220-pound division, going 7-0 and recording seven pins. Hill also went 7-0 and had six-pins. He won the class by beating his opponent from Marlow 3-0 in the finals.
Sophomore Dakota Resendez was also undefeated for the tournament, going 7-0 to win the 126-pound division with a 5-1 decision in the gold medal round. In the 182-pound division, Riley Williams just missed out on first in a 3-2 loss to his Anadarko state runner-up opponent in the final round. Javier Willets (5-2), Bret Stone (5-2) and Lamar Neff (6-1) all placed second in their respective weight divisions.
Devon Stephens and Montana Moon placed fifth and sixth in the 106-pound division in their first high school event. Nick Sales (5-2), Damon Sales (4-3) and Dao Xian (4-3) all placed fifth. TJ Wicks took fourth in the 195-pound division, and Alex Scallion got sixth at heavyweight.
Chickasha's next action sees them host Shawnee in duals on Jan. 7 at the Chickasha Activity Center. In the meantime, the wrestlers will spend the holidays staying in wrestling shape.
"We will have some big workouts over Christmas break," Randle said. "We will have training sessions with Westmoore, Tuttle, Southmoore and Anadarko New Years week to ready us for the second half of the season."
