Improved times take CHS swim to second

CHICKASHA —

Chickasha swimming came in second overall in a meet they hosted Monday night, but many swimmers reached new heights with improved times all around.

The Fightin' Chicks placed just behind Mustang, who won the meet with 134 points. Putnam City West came in third. The meet was deemed Senior Night since it is the last one Chickasha will host in the USAO Field House for the remainder of the season that runs through February.

On the special occasion, the Chickasha swimmers gave a top-drawer effort, head coach Terri Gallaway said.

"Against this very tough competition, our kids had the best meet of the season so far," she said.

At the top of that list of improved times are  sophomores Gabriel Oliver, who took first in the boys 50 meter freestyle with a time of 28.87 seconds -- more than two seconds better than his seed time -- and Caitlin Critchfield, who improved her 100 meter butterfly time by four seconds to take first in 1:29.07. Sophomore Dale Courtney also had a personal best time of 2:39.21 to win the 200 meter individual medley.

Senior Erin Chambers took almost eight seconds off her 100 meter freestyle time to take third in 1:27.27, while fellow senior Andrew Ross came in two seconds faster for a second place finish in the boys 100 meter free. To complete the senior night, Kale Nye took second in the 100 meter breast stroke with a time of 1:28.19, a second better than his seed time.

Greta Crowl had the biggest jump, with about a nine second improvement to take fifth in the girls 100 meter backstroke in 1:46.99. Also Bailey Bryan and Emily Thomas took fifth and sixth in the 100 meter breast stroke with improved times of 1:50.08 and 1:54.65, respectively. The girls' 200 meter freestyle relay team also improved their time to take second in 2:23.79.
