In the Saddle with first baseman Zach Gonzalez

CHICKASHA — From solid hitting to great catches at first base, Zach Gonzalez has been a crucial part to the Drover baseball program for the last two seasons. In fact, he may be best known for his sliding splits first.

“In junior high, I just went out to try to get somebody out, and I just happened to be in the splits. Every since then, I just go out there and try to look good doing it,” he said with a laugh.

The Drovers are 32-14 going into two final Sooner Athletic Conference series, including one against No. 19 Oklahoma Baptist.

“Now we just have those next two weeks, which are huge,” Gonzalez said. “The personal goals really have nothing to do with me. I just want to do whatever we can to get to the national tournament … that’s where we all want to go.”

Despite success on the field, Gonzalez wasn’t always a fan of baseball.

“I would be the one kid in the outfield dancing around … not paying attention the game,” he said. “I really loved basketball, but then as I grew up I wasn’t tall enough to play basketball. Baseball really caught on to me, and I really started loving it.”

He plans to graduate in August with a degree in physical education but will be walking at USAO’s Friday evening graduation ceremony.
