VERDEN – Verden put a damper on Dibble’s season openers Saturday night, sweeping the Demons at the Tigers’ Den. Center Tayler McComas had a game-high 11 points to lead the girls to a 41-31 win, and Paden Embrey and John Molz were in double figures to lead the boys to a 52-37 win.
GIRLS: VERDEN 41, DIBBLE 31
The Tigers won the game inside, starting early with McComas and forward Tamara Smith combining for 11 points to open up a 15-5 first quarter lead.
After both teams went ice cold in the second quarter, Verden spread the scoring around in the third to extend the lead to 34-19.
Dibble rallied and won the fourth quarter 12-7 as it pushed the ball and Verden kept taking the air out of it, but the Tigers kept them at bay and finished it from the free throw line.
Besides McComas’ 11, point guard Carly Skinner had eight points; Smith and Rikkie Davidson each had seven; Taylor Harris had six and Missy Pena added two.
Verden was also pounding the glass on both ends of the floor all game. Davidson led with nine rebounds, Skinner had eight, and Harris and Smith had six each.
Tana Alexander, Allison Lohman and Jessica Johnston had nine points each for the Demons, Johnston’s on three treys.
BOYS: VERDEN 52,
DIBBLE 37
Cody Fairman had a huge night for Dibble with four threes and a game-high 19 points, but Verden’s balanced offense went to work inside and outside for the double-digit win.
Fairman had the hot hand early with 13 first-half points, but Colton Henricks and John Mitchell each buried a pair of threes and Paden Embrey had five mid-range points to get the Tigers within four at the half, 25-21.
When they came back out, Fairman nailed another three early, but Verden started pushing the ball inside. Embrey exploded for seven points to tie things at 28 and ignite a 16-3 run to take control of the game and start the fourth quarter up 37-30.
Fairman kept cooling off and southpaw John Molz heated up, scoring seven points down the stretch to lock down the Tiger win.
Embrey had a team-high 16 points and Molz finished with 11. Henricks had eight, John Mitchell had six, Tyler Mitchell and Cale Dolch had four each and Craig Hannah nailed a three from the corner in the fourth.
Both Tiger teams head to Gracemont Tuesday with identical 3-2 records.
