TECUMSEH –Chickasha’s JV volleyball team came up just short Wednesday in its bid to repeat as Tecumseh Tournament Champions, losing to the host Savages in three tight games.
After dropping game one 24-26, the defending champion Lady Chicks bounced back for a 25-16 equalizer, but Tecumseh hung on for a 15-13 win in the rubber game.
“We were tied at 13 but had a service error to give them the ball for match point,” Waters said. “The girls fought hard in a long rally but they finally got the ball down on us for the win.”
The same teams split in their first round of pool play, with Tecumseh taking game one 27-25 and Chickasha, game two at 25-14.
The Chicks went on to beat Drumright (25-13, 25-7) and Seminole (25-21, 25-18) before splitting with Norman’s Community Christian (26-24, 23-25) on their way to the title match.
Shelby Crosley and Sydney McNabb were named to the All-Tournament Team after finishing with 20 and 19 aces respectively.
Will’Eisha Irby had a solid day at the net with seven kills and four blocks, Dana Rose had five kills and two digs, Rachel White and Jackie Bickerstaff added two kills each and Rachelle Phillips had five digs. Crosley also had three digs and McNabb had a kill.
“It was a good tournament for us,” the coach said. “The girls played well all day long, did a great job and had fun.”
The team went in short with four players missing due to injury and illness and Waters couldn’t say enough about how well the kids that went played.
“They went in with so much confidence and played like they expected to win. They really stepped up. We came so close to winning it and I’m thrilled for them.”
