CMS Chicks take 4th in Chickasha tournament

By CHUCK LARSEN

Sports Editor

CHICKASHA – Denise Burns’ Lady Chicks finished fourth in the middle school division of this weekend’s Chickasha Invitational.

They run-ruled Elgin 10-0 then shut out all-freshman Verden 5-0 just as rain halted play on Thursday, then run-ruled Indiahoma 13-3 on Friday.

Davis got by them 1-0 Saturday to send them to the third-place game and Blanchard won the bracket matchup 8-4.

“When it comes down to bracket play, it depends on which team makes the plays and puts the bat on the ball,” Burns said. “Unfortunately, we had too many errors and not enough hits, but overall it was a fantastic tournament.”

In spite of the disappointing finish, Burns was very pleased with her kids’ effort.

“They played hard, made plays and hit the ball real well,” she said. “I wish they could have been a little more consistent but we have a lot of young girls and these types of tournaments and a little maturity will help us a lot.”

The coach praised her eighth-grade leaders, pitcher Bri Hoskins, catcher Kelsee Crawford and first baseman Brittany Nieto.

“Our three eighth grade team leaders did a fantastic job. Bri only had four walks all tournament and Kelsee had very few passed balls. Brittany gives us a big stick and a big heart at first base. They’re great kids and great leaders on and off the field.”

The Chicks host Lawton Macarthur on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m. and Shawnee on Friday, Sept. 11, at 5 p.m.
