ARDMORE – Chickasha freshman Taylor Williams shot a 69, 75 and 74 to finish seventh overall at the 5A State Golf Tournament Tuesday at Dornick Hills earlier this week. Besides medalling, his first state tourney was a memorable one.

After a routine first day on Monday, Tuesday’s start was delayed due to rain and communication between tournament officials and the coaches broke down. When officials decided on a 10 a.m. shotgun start for the final round (all players start at the same time, but on different holes), Williams was still at the hotel and had to be rushed over to the course and begin play cold.

“It was a par-three water hole and without any warmup, he shot a quadruple-bogey seven,” coach Chad Randle said. “He went in with a three-hole cushion on the guys behind him but now they were even. I told him to just go out there and play his game and it would still work out.”

Williams heeded the advice and finished the round with two bogies, two birdies and 13 pars for his medal.

Braden Meadows shot a 76, 78 and 79 to finish in the middle of the pack.
