DURANT – Chickasha only advanced two runners to state at the Durant 5A/6A Regional Saturday but came out of it with a few athletes still on the bubble.

Juron Woods is in with a second-place finish and a time of :10.69 in the 100M and Xzavier Grey also advanced with a second place finish in the 400M with a :51.60.

Both made it to next weekend’s 5A/6A State Track and Field Championships at Ardmore’s Noble Stadium but could have some “at-large” company.

Leah Ray (100M hurdles), Will’Eisha Irby (high jump), Masci Sledge (shot), Jo Euwins (200M) and the 4X100 relay team (Euwins, Colton Santos, Meechie Euwins and Woods) will know by Tuesday if they will also qualify. (The top three finishers from each of the four Regionals are joined by the next four best qualifiers overall from all four regional sites to round out each field to sixteen competitors.)

Woods ran a :10.90 in the preliminaries for third but kicked it up to a :10.69 in the finals for second, getting edged out by Ada’s Chaz Daniels with a :10:36.

Gray just had to run once in the 400 and also finished right behind an Ada runner. Michael Roberts took first with a :49.08 and Gray was second with a :51.60.

In the girls’ bubble group are Leah Ray, with a fifth-place finish in both the 100M hurdles (:18.84) and the 300M low hurdles (:53.02), Will’Eisha Irby, with a fourth place finish in the high jump (4-06) and Masci Sledge, with a fifth-place finish in the shot with 33-09.

For the guys, Jo Euwins could make it into the 200M with a time of 22.96 and the 4X100 team could get in with their 43.82. Both times were good for fourth-place finishes.

In the non-qualifying group, Gab Atwell finished seventh in the 100M with a :13.62 and eighth in the 200 with a 30.00. Priscilla Kandeh had a personal best of 1:07.38 for an eighth-place finish in the 400 and Nikissiah Widener ran a 6:48.95 for seventh in the 1600.

Besides her fourth-place finish in the high jump, Will’Eisha Irby placed fifth in the long jump with a 15-07.50. Sidney Henderson was 17th in the 100 with an :11.79, Meechie Euwins finished sixth in the 200 with a :23.40 and Stephen Mitchell took sixth in the 400 with a :52.92.

Coach Gary Sampson was happy overall with the young team’s performance and is high on his promising freshman class. He expects Ray, Irby, Mitchell, Henderson and miler Matt Tsonetokoy to have breakout seasons next year as sophomores and form a solid nucleus for the team for the next three years.
