The Alex Longhorns' Class B trek will begin in August. They are one of the teams who begin their season on Aug. 25 and get a week off during the regular season. Alex is coming off a season where they finished 9-3 and were District B-3 champions. They fell to Shattuck in the second round of the playoffs by the score of 36-26.
The Longhorns open the season on the road against a foe not part of the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association. They play the OKC Patriots at 7:30 p.m.
The other four non-district opponents are teams that the Longhorns saw last season. They play Fox on Sept. 1 on the road at 7:30 p.m. Alex defeated Fox last season 50-20. Fox went 3-8 in 2016, losing to Carnegie in the first round of the playoffs.
After a week off, two Class B giants will meet in Alex on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns will meet Davenport for a showdown between the 2014 state champions and 2015 state champions. Davenport defeated Alex last season. They fell to Laverne in the state semifinals.
Alex and another non-OSSAA opponent will meet on Sept. 22. Alex will face Destiny Christian at home at 7:30 p.m. The two teams played a thrilling game last season. Alex was able to outlast Destiny Christian 44-42.
Alex's final non-district game will also be at home. The Longhorns host Maysville on Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Alex easily defeated the Warriors in 2016, 52-6. Maysville did end up making the playoffs, finishing the year with an 8-4 record.
The Longhorns will then begin district play on Oct. 6 with the first of three consecutive games on the road. They went 4-1 in the district last season en route to the district title.
They open play against Carnegie at 7 p.m., the only district foe to beat Alex in 2016. Carnegie came out on top 34-28. The Wildcats advanced to the second round of the playoffs.
The Longhorns will face Burns Flat-Dill City on Oct. 12 and then Geary on Oct. 20. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Alex defeated Burns Flat-Dill City 56-6 last season. They beat Geary 30-18. Geary was another playoff team. They went 10-3 and advanced to the state quarterfinals.
Scheduled to start at 7 p.m. on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, Alex will finish the season with two straight home games. They host Cyril and Snyder to end the regular season.
Alex defeated Cyril 44-22. Cyril went 7-4 last season. They closed the regular season by shutting out Snyder 52-0.
