Ira Daniel “Danny” Cornelius

— Ira Daniel “Danny” Cornelius

Ira Daniel “Danny” Cornelius, 93, of Issaquah, Wash., passed away July 19, 2013. He was born May 4, 1920, in Muskogee, and was married Dec. 17, 1941, to Juanita until her death in 2005. Survivors include daughters Janean Ozias (husband Blake) and Carolyn Larrabee (husband Scott), five grandchildren (David, Heather, Matt, Karen & Erin), and three great grandchildren (Kenyon, Alex & Liam). He will be greatly missed.

He began military service at age 16 in the Oklahoma National Guard. At age 20, he served as a gunner photographer in the Army Air Corps. During World War II he served in the Mediterranean in the 441st Squadron of the 320th Bomber Group as a B-26 pilot. He flew 63 missions and was awarded a Purple Heart, Distinguished Flying Cross and Croix de Guerre for his service. He retired in 1970, a Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves.

Danny made a career, first as the owner of Cornelius Chevrolet in Kaw City,  then as a career life underwriter for New England Mutual Life.

He and his family lived in Boulder, Colo. from 1954 to 1971. Then having moved to the Big Thompson canyon, he and Juanita survived the Big Thompson flood on July 31, 1976, when they lost their home, their beagle Penny, and all their belongings. They relocated to Campion, Colo., and lived there for 32 years at their beloved “Cottonwood Acres.” Before moving to Issaquah, he resided in the Loveland, Colo. area.

He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was active in journalism, an equestrian program, and as the drum major of the marching band. Danny was multi-talented in music (drummer, lyricist, vocalist), photography, golfing, gardening, stamp collecting, and had his own cottage industry with Juanita producing leather crafts and jewelry. They enjoyed various excursions with their grandchildren, especially to Loveland, Colo., to visit Centennial Village and the train in Loveland Park. They enjoyed attending their many activities.

He had a strong Christian faith and attended several churches during his lifetime. His final residence was a Christian nursing facility in Issaquah (Providence Marianwood) during the last 2-½ years of his life after suffering a stroke while still in Colorado.

His family suggests that in lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Providence Marianwood Foundation or Providence Hospice would be appreciated. This can be done on the internet at www.providence.org/marianwood or send via mail to: Providence Marianwood Foundation, 3725 Providence Point Drive SE, Issaquah, WA 98029.
