— William Carl Nelson

Funeral service for William Carl Nelson, age 99 of Verden,  will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014 at the Verden First Baptist Church. Eddie Cox will officiate and Rev. David Gardner will assist.

William Carl was born the son of Coot Harold Nelson and Alma McCorkle Nelson on Sept. 25, 1914 in Shay, Okla. He died on Jan. 30, 2014 in Chickasha.

Carl grew up in Geary, Oklahoma. He entered the United States Army in 1943 and served during World War II in the European Theatre. After the war ended, he eventually found his way to Watonga where he met Lucille Cox in the fall of 1946. They were married on April 27, 1947 in Dutton. They eventually settled near Geary where they raised their family. While in Geary, he worked as an engineer for the Soil Conservation Service. After retiring in 1974, they moved to the farm north of Dutton where he farmed for many years. In 1989 he moved to Verden but continued farming.

Carl was a member of the Verden United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Coot and Alma Nelson, brother, Boyd Nelson, sister, Opal Butler, and half sister, Reba Jones.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Cox Nelson of Verden; daughter and husband, Carolyn and Terry Teel of Yukon; daughter and husband, Janet and Dudley Bourne of Oro Valley, AZ; son and wife, Ronnie and Elizabeth Nelson of Pocasset; son and wife, Glen and Gail Nelson of Owasso; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Coot Nelson of Watonga; brother, Ernest Moore of Wewoka; brother, Freeman Moore of Enid; brother, Raymond Moore of Euless, Texas; sister, Delores Davis of Stonewall.

Interment will be in the Verden Cemetery. Service will be under the direction of the McRay Funeral Home.
