Geraldine Frances Oswalt
Geraldine Frances (Parris) Oswalt was born the daughter of George Wesley and Alice Lucy (McMahon) Parris on November 27, 1921 in Munday, Texas. She entered into peaceful and eternal rest on February 9, 2014 at the age of 92 in Tulsa, OK where she has resided since 2004. She lived at The Parke and most recently the Tulsa Jewish Retirement & Health Center.
In 1923, Geraldine (Jerry) moved with her family to Tillman County, OK. She graduated high school from Victory Consolidated 11 School near Davidson and junior college from Cameron College in Lawton. She later attended Central State College in Edmond and OCW, now USAO, in Chickasha. After marrying Edward Samuel Oswalt in 1941, they lived briefly in Duncan before moving to Wagoner, OK during WWII. While Ed was serving as an area superintendent with DuPont Chemical Company doing smokeless powder research for the Ordinance Department of the Army, Jerry was a homemaker and new mother to Denzil. They later moved to Stillwater, OK where Hal was born and Jerry taught school and coached girls basketball in Glencoe, OK while Ed served as secretary-manager of the Oklahoma Foundation Seed Stocks. In 1951, the Oswalts moved to Chickasha, OK where Ed became the Superintendent of OSU’s Oklahoma Cotton Research Station, presently known as the South Central Research Station.
During her years in Chickasha, Jerry gave birth to Deborah and worked at the Chickasha Daily Express, the Federal Land Bank, the Grady County Courthouse and the Agriculture Stabilization & Conservation office. She was a member of the First Christian Church during her 53 years in Chickasha and was active in the Tye Christian Women’s Circle now known as the Disciples Women’s Fellowship. Jerry’s interests included her love of flowers and gardening, dancing, and playing cards with friends. Jerry loved Oklahoma State University where her husband, three children and four grandchildren all attended. Her greatest love was reserved for her family to whom she gave unending support and encouragement.
Survivors include her three children and their spouses: Denzil Oswalt and wife, Janice, of Tulsa; Hal Oswalt and wife, Susan, of Austin, TX; and Deborah Oswalt of New Haven, CT. She is also survived by four grandchildren and their spouses: Lauren Oswalt Sicking and husband, Shawn, of Tulsa, Erica Oswalt Davidson and husband, Barrett, of OKC, Eli Oswalt and wife, Eve, of Edmond and Ali Oswalt of Tulsa. Her great grandchildren are Ethan, Ella, Peyton, Gavin and Alexis. Her husband, Ed, parents, Alice and George, and a brother, William G. Parris, preceded her in death.
A gathering to celebrate Jerry’s life will be scheduled at a future date. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Chickasha under the direction of McRay Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Disciples Women’s Fellowship at the First Christian Church, 202 S 6th ST, Chickasha, OK 73018.
