Dominant defense propels Minco to win over Alex

MINCO — The Minco High School girls basketball team wasn't shooting the ball well Monday night against the Alex Lady Longhorns, but it didn't matter much, The Lady Bulldogs' defense picked up the slack.

In a 46-22 win, Minco didn't allow Alex (5-11) to score more than seven points in any quarter, shutting down the lane with a tight zone defense.

The Lady Bulldogs' poor shooting kept the game close in the first quarter, when Minco only led 8-6 after the period. In the second quarter, Alex only scored two points, and Minco took a 21-8 lead into halftime.

"You'd like to be balanced," Minco head coach Bruce Hobgood said. "You'd like to be able to score and to play defense, and work hard on both. But, defense was a factor tonight."

Minco junior center Sydni Hutchinson was also a factor, scoring 14 of her 20 total points in the second half and controlling the paint on both ends of the floor.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 11-5, and will play the winner of the game between Rush Springs and Oklahoma Christian Academy at 4 p.m. Thursday. Alex will play the loser between Rush Springs and OCA at 4 p.m. Friday.

Hobgood said his team is focused on the next opponent, and not looking ahead to a possible matchup with seven-time defending champ Amber-Pocasset.

"I know who we play next, and that's all that counts," Hobgood said.
