First win for volleyball comes at Carl Albert

Lady Chicks' volleyball went 1-6 at the Carl Albert Tournament this weekend, but were able to exact revenge against the tournament hosts after a controversial loss to them last week.

With two 25-19 results, Chickasha downed Carl Albert for their first win of the season. The Chicks showed a lot of heart to take the victory, head coach Nancy Waters said.

"They wanted to win against Carl Albert and they showed that with their play," she said.

In their tournament opener against Choctaw, the Lady Chicks barely lost out in the first game 25-22, but the second game was much more one-sided at 25-8.

"We started off well against Choctaw and then just fell apart," Waters said. "That started a downhill slide against Carl Albert JV and Collinsville."

Against the host's junior varsity squad, Chickasha succumbed to a 20-25, 14-25 loss. Collinsville went in a similar way, and it looked like Chickasha might have a difficult couple of days ahead of them.

The Carl Albert result lifted some spirits, but sixth-ranked team in the state Deer Creek proved a much more difficult opponent and beat Chickasha 25-15, 25-17.

Another loss to Piedmont matched the Lady Chicks against Choctaw again in the knock-out round on Saturday. The opening match ended in a narrow 25-27 defeat for Chickasha, but the ladies bounced back with a 25-21 result to knot the match at a game each. Devyn Crosley fell ill in the third game, which required some rotating by Waters and put Luz Juarez and Tania Davis particularly in the spotlight. Waters said she was happy with the way they filled in, but errors cost the Lady Chicks as the fell 25-16 and 25-11.

"We played well in spurts, we just did not play well all day long," Waters said. "As a team, we must become more consistent in our play. Defense is not the problem. As a team, we had 295 digs, which means we are getting the ball up and off the floor. Now, we just have to make the good pass and get our own kills."
