Drovers jump into NAIA Top 25

CHICKASHA — With the best start in school history, the Drover baseball team leapt up from unranked to the 22nd spot in the first NAIA Baseball Coaches’ Top 25.

The Drovers, who have compiled a record of 27-5, have not been ranked since the 2009 season, where they got as high as 21.

Five Sooner Athletic Conference schools appear on the list, which is the most for any conference in the country. Other SAC schools are: (2) Oklahoma City, (6) Rogers State, (11) Lubbock Christian and (14) Oklahoma Baptist.

Despite having the strongest overall record of SAC opponents, USAO is listed as fifth in the NAIA Conference Rankings, which is where the Drovers started the season. USAO is 5-2 in conference play.

USAO is among eight schools to jump into the Top 25 from an unranked status.

Only one team, (9) Faulkner (Ala.) has more wins than the Drovers with 28 on the season. Three Top 25 teams have fewer losses.

After a 2-2 split with No. 11 Lubbock Christian last weekend, the Drovers play No. 2 Oklahoma City in a four game series this week, first with a doubleheader on Thursday at Oklahoma City. They return home to finish the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Their schedule doesn’t get much easier, however, as they battle No. 6 Rogers State the following week.

A panel of head coaches representing each of the conference groups voted on teams to compose the poll. The second regular-season Top 25 will be announced April 2.
