In the Saddle with coach Leandra Johnson

CHICKASHA — As the women’s basketball season at USAO winds down, the Drover coaches are looking heavily at recruits and focusing on off-season preparations, said assistant coach Leandra Johnson.

With seven seniors leaving, Johnson said they are directing their efforts on athletes coming out of two-year schools to bring in maturity.

“We are going to be looking for a lot of junior college transfers and then we will pick up some freshmen,” she said.

With just a handful of players returning, Johnson and head coach Jennifer Hayden are still planning how to handle this off season.

“Right now, we don’t know exactly what we are going to be doing. We’ve been throwing some ideas back and forth off of each other trying to figure out what we are going to do,” Johnson said. “We might just set them up with individual workouts then just have an open gym.”

This week, the Sooner Athletic Conference released All-Conference athletes — including USAO’s Rocio Medrano. Additionally, seven student-athletes on the women’s team were named Academic All-SAC, which was the highest number of athletes from any one SAC school.

Johnson said she was pleased with the large number of players to receive such an honor.

“We had study hall during first semester,” Johnson explained. “What we want them to realize is that number one, you are here to be a student. You are here to get a degree.”
