Chicks start football fightin' regional rivals

CHICKASHA —

Anadarko and El Reno get the 2013 football season underway for Chickasha, as season schedules are released.

The Fightin' Chicks travel to Anadarko to take on the Warriors in their season opener on Sept. 6, followed by a return home against El Reno the following Friday night, Sept. 13.

"Anadarko is an interesting rivalry," Chickasha Head Coach Tom Cobble said. "We're the bigger school and for 40 years or so we dominated them. In the past three or four years, Anadarko has been the school winning. The record with El Reno is much more even."

Chickasha will hope to begin this season against Anadarko on a better note than last year, when they lost to the Caddo County team 33-2 at Memorial Stadium. They followed that up with a nail-bittingly close 15-14 win at El Reno.

Attention then switches to Cache, a team Chickasha has only recently began playing against, before 5A District 1 play begins with a visit from Altus on Sept. 27. The Altus game also marks the Fightin' Chicks' homecoming week.

The team begin October with a trip to Capitol Hill and a home bout with Lawton MacArthur. Chickasha plays a rare Thursday night game against Ardmore on Oct. 17.

Del City rounds out the month, and Chickasha then head to Southeast. The season ends with a visit from Duncan, the team Cobble says is the biggest district rivalry for the Fightin' Chicks.

The District 1 schedule is expected to be a difficult one, Cobble said, as every team poses a threat in their own way.

"It's going to be a knockdown drag out and survival of the fittest," Cobble said.

This preseason will also turn into a race to become the fittest, as teams only become eligible to practice on Aug. 12, days before many schools begin session. Coaches will report on Aug. 5, and Chickasha High School begins Aug. 15, two days after the football team's first practice on Aug. 13.

The community will be invited out to Meet the Chicks on Aug. 17 at Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

Junior High teams will report to practice the day school begins, Aug. 15, at 7:45 a.m.
