Passing gets Mustang workout

As the Fightin' Chicks edge closer to the start of two-a-days, the program got a look at how their backs and receivers are shaping up at a 7-on-7 passing league held in Mustang last week.

Along with Westmoore and Putnam City, Chickasha brought a small squad up to Mustang for the evening workout and put up a solid show, Tom Cobble said.

"We're looking for wide receivers, so we got a good workout for guys like Rashawn Thomas, Lindbergh Casey," Cobble said.

Cade Morris, largely expected to be the Fightin' Chicks' starting quarterback in the fall, also got in a few reps.

"Cade had a good night," Cobble said. "He threw probably 40 balls and had no interceptions, which is always good. We also got a good workout for our linebackers and deep backs. We played Mustang, Westmoore and Putnam City, and we gave up one touchdown. That just happened because one of our guys went for the ball and just missed it."

During the passing league, teams got a chance to play both offense and defense on a 40-yard field.

"You take your backs and receivers, and the other team has their linebackers and deep backs," Cobble said. "You just get to work on your passing game and going through the motions. The, you'll rotate around to get work on the defensive side."

Teams across the state start limited football practice Aug. 12, while full practice can begin the following week. The Fightin' Chicks will play two scrimmages against Blanchard and Clinton before opening the season Sept. 6 away to Anadarko.
