Brown signs to wrestle at NEO

CHICKASHA — Chickasha High School's first two-time wrestling state champion has decided on a college, and signed to wrestle at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami, Okla., on Tuesday.

Jacoby Brown signed his letter of intent to attend NEO in the Chickasha High School library, and will be joining a newly-restored program led by a national championship-winning junior college coach.

NEO hired Joe Renfro, previously coaching at Labette Community College, in October 2012. Brown said the hiring of Renfro helped influence his decision of where to attend college.

"It was either Labette or NEO, and once I found out he was going to NEO, I just wanted to go there," Brown said. "Just from meeting him once, I kind of wanted to go there.  He reminded me of Coach Randle."

Renfro led Labette to two NJCAA championships and two runner-up finishes.

Brown will likely wrestle as a heavyweight in college, and said Renfro has big plans for him during his college career.

"He said he's trying to mold me into a national champion, and I felt that was kind of cool," Brown said.

Brown said there are some other wrestlers signed with NEO that he is familiar with, so he won't be going up to Miami completely alone. Miami is about three and a half hours northeast of Chickasha.

NEO had a wrestling program from 1975 until 1993, and will restart in the fall of 2013.

The school is building new wrestling facilities on campus, which will include a locker room and practice area.
