Tigers top Am-Po in Grady County baseball showdown

AMBER —

Verden ran out winners over Grady County rival Amber-Pocasset as both teams look to gain a foothold early on in the fall baseball season.

The Tigers won 7-3 over Am-Po in the early season Red Dirt Tournament held in Amber Friday afternoon. Five runs in the third inning gave Verden the boost they needed to put the game beyond reach. Until then, Am-Po had led 2-1.

Verden took a 1-0 lead out of the first, with Tristan Morgan going across home plate on a balk. The Panthers also struck early, with pitcher Levi Scott sending Ethan James in to score on a RBI-single in the bottom of the first. Stanton James doubled their lead with a sacrifice fly.

After a scoreless second, Verden brought out the bats. A double by Hunter Morgan brought around Alex Whitlow to give his team the lead after Morgan already crossed the plate for his second run. Another double by Benny Crowder sent pitcher Benjamin Verser across, and the inning got worse for Am-Po after a walk and a hit batter resulted in two more easy runs.

The visitors added another run in the fourth inning, which turned out to be the final frame due to tournament time constraints.

Despite striking out two batters in his 2.1 innings on the mound, Am-Po's Scott wasn't able to keep things going this time around and was replaced midway through the third inning. His counterpart, Verser, had a nice outing for Verden, striking out six batters while letting up five hits.

Both teams played a second game later in the evening, while the Red Dirt tournament lasts into the weekend.
