The Chickasha High School girls soccer team won the Chickasha Invitational on Saturday the same way it did it last season, by beating Harrah in the title game.
The Lady Chicks, playing without one of their leaders, Kelsey Taylor, came back with two second half goals to beat the No. 8 team in class 5A 2-1 for the tournament championship.
"Our first game today, [Taylor] went down, and she's a big attacking force for us," head coach Bethany Goble said. "We're a scrappy little team, and we just fight to the finish."
Chickasha didn't play well in the early, and fell behind midway through the first half, when Harrah scored on a corner kick.
The Lady Chicks players may have gotten down on themselves a little after falling behind, but Goble said she did not doubt what the result of the game would be.
"It seems like they got down a little bit," Goble said. "First halves, they just kill us, because we don't come out like we need to. We are a second half team. I told them I had no doubt we were going to win the game, and we came out and lit it up."
The game was physical, much like last year's tournament matchup. Goble said her team was prepared for the style of play.
"We were ready for it because of last year," Goble said. "We knew they were a different team, and so are we, but we're Chickasha, we fight through every ball, push through it, and eventually we will come out with a win.
Chickasha was down 1-0 at halftime. With 14:06 to play, freshman Taylor Lessig scored the tying goal.
As the clock ran down and it looked like the game might be heading into overtime, Lessig scored the game-winning goal on a play during which the Harrah goalkeeper got out of place and couldn't recover.
With Taylor out with a broken nose from a game earlier Saturday, Lessig picked up the slack.
"We have four or five freshmen out there that are filling big roles for us," Goble said. "I'm excited."
Chickasha will play a road game against the Noble Lady Bears at 5 p.m. Tuesday, and will host El Reno on Friday.
