Latham, Phillips place for Chickasha at powerlifting state

— Josh Latham and John Phillips both placed at the OFBCA State Powerlifting meet at McLoud.

Latham placed second in the 220-pound class, scoring 14 total points and finishing just four behind state champion Chase Mercer.

Latham, a junior wrestler and fullback, squatted 460 pounds, bench-pressed 360 pounds and deadlifted 515 pounds. His bench press weight was the best in class, and his deadlift was second.

Phillips placed fourth, totalling six points after squatting 540 pounds, bench-pressing 335 pounds and deadlifting 530 pounds.

Shaq Oliver and Austin Valdez also competed at state. Oliver squatted 285 pounds, and Valdez squatted 385, benched 275 and deadlifted 450.

Tuttle's Jesse Gregory, Blanchard's Braden Stringer and Bridge Creek's Brett Morris all won state titles in their respective weight classes.

As a team,  Blanchard finished as runner-up to Midwest City High School in the large school division.

Bridge Creek placed 12th with 28 team points. Tuttle was 14th with 25 points, and Chickasha was 15th with 20 points.

Other placers: Mason Trevine of Bridge Creek placed fifth at 145 pounds. D.J. Williams of Blanchard placed fourth at 242 pounds.

Blanchard’s Stringer (lightweight bencher) and Bridge Creek’s Morris (heavyweight bencher) were outstanding lifters.

Minco and Rush Springs had lifters at state in the small school division.

For Minco, Brandon Fletcher (145), Tyler Mitchum (181) and J.T. Lee all lifted at state. For Rush Springs, Peter Huerta competed at 220.
