Offensive overload leads Chicks past Norman

Big hits are raining down on Lady Chicks softball opponents lately, as they beat Norman High 10-0 Tuesday night after finishing a weekend tournament with three home runs in one game.

The heavy hitting comes within the week that the team heads to the crisp, thin air of Denver for a tournament, where head coach Dennis Furr hopes the bats continue to play a big part in games.

"We seem to hit better against better pitching," Furr said. "The girl from Norman was really good. We were on yesterday. We do still have days we struggle. But, I know we can hit like that."

After hitting one out of the park against Oklahoma Athletics, Tristan Watkins continued her good run of form by smashing another home run against Norman High. Kelsi Gore, who put two past the fence over the weekend, got a double and a triple to contribute to Chickasha's overwhelming win.

Tawn Neidy and Tori Smith also kept their offensive effort going with a double and three hits, respectively. Equally as important, the Lady Chicks saw another good outing from pitcher Keeley Cauthan to get the shutout.

"We got a really good night of pitching from Keeley," Furr said. "They only had two or three hits."

Despite Norman High being a larger school than Chickasha, Furr said his team felt confident heading into the game. Their opponents had also not succumbed to defeat yet in summer league play.

"They hadn't lost a game in summer league, so our intensity was a little more than usual," Furr said. "We went into the game expecting to win. They are one of the better teams in our little league."

The tournament in Denver, which begins on Tuesday of next week for the Lady Chicks and runs through Sunday, July 7, is a chance for team bonding while meeting the challenge of facing unfamiliar teams and players.

"There will be lose to 200 teams or more in our age group," Furr said. "It's a challenge for sure. But, we went last year and did really well. It's one of those things where the games are always close. Hopefully, [our hitting] will continue up there."
