Henderson leads floor in CHS loss

CHICKASHA — A rare slow start for Chickasha put them on the wrong end of a 53-43 result against No. 20 Guthrie on Tuesday.

More than half of Chickasha’s total came from freshman Brock Henderson, who went 8-14 from the floor to finish with a game-high 24. Guthrie’s answer was L’iott Curry and his 21 points.

The big difference in this game was the slow start. There were times in the first half when it seemed neither team wanted to score. The Fightin’ Chicks especially found it hard, although they were only down by eight at the half. But of their 18 first half points, 10 were scored at the charity stripe.

Most of those were from Henderson, who worked in tandem with Shumway, penetrating the lane looking to find an open Levi Kel or Cole Young in the disruption.

Bailey Nichols was causing plenty of that at the other end, enough to finish with 20 points. He rushed to nine points early, hindered, like a lot of the Guthrie team in the first half, by fouls. It was a sign of aggressive defense, perhaps why Chickasha found it so hard to find a basket.

He came back for more in the second half, starting things off with five points right out of the locker room. The Fightin’ Chicks kept playing the penetration game, with little room on the wings. Henderson finally found enough for the first three of the night for Chickasha with two-and-a-half minutes left. It cut the deficit to 14, and out of a timeout they went into a press.

It worked the first few times and gave the Chicks a little momentum, enough to bring the deficit back to 10 by the end of things.
