AMBER — In a low scoring, scrappy third place game, Amber-Pocasset won the girls’ honor 31-20 over Alex.
It was a game that got tighter as quarters passed, with more action away from the basket than at it. Darci Williams did get enough time and space to lead the floor with 11 points for Am-Po, and Suzanne Parker amassed a steady 10 points.
The Lady Longhorns struggled to see their shots fall. A team that normally lives off its three point shooting only sank two from beyond the arc the whole game. Those came from Autumn Zachary and gave her six points, second only to Ashley Williams who put in seven.
The Lady Panthers made a habit of inside shooting. They didn’t even attempt a shot from beyond the arc in the first quarter, but they didn’t need to. Savage got inside easy twice for a few close-range jumpers as Alex struggled to get their shooting going.
They had only six points in each quarter in the first half, but held Am-Po to just three in the second frame to claw their way back within a field goal of the hosts by halftime. The scoring stopped as the intensity rose. There were only six points scored in the whole of the third quarter.
Am-Po started to build a significant lead early in the fourth. Zachary’s second three pointer of the game brought the Lady Longhorns back within seven, but the hosts continued to score at the other end. Winn’s 7 points in the fourth quarter carried the Lady Panthers alongside Parker’s five.
