Toughest challenge yet for Chickasha girls

CHICKASHA — Head coach Christy Edelen and the Chickasha High School girls basketball team know what they're up against tonight.

The Lady Chicks have played well all season, but will face one of their toughest challenges of the year when they host No. 1 Anadarko.

"I know Edmond Santa Fe beat them, but that's the No. 1 team in 6A, and Anadarko is probably the next-best team in the state of Oklahoma," Edelen said. "And I'm sure coach Zinn would like to play Edmond Santa Fe again."

Anadarko lost to Edmond Santa Fe in the Edmond Open tournament, but has beaten all its other opponents by large margins, including a 66-45 win over 6A No. 3 Edmond Memorial and a 56-35 win over Elgin, a team that the Chicks have had two close losses against this year.

For Chickasha, success in a game against a team as good as Anadarko is measured differently than it might be in other games. Not that Edelen thinks her team doesn't have a chance to win, but she knows it is an uphill battle.

"You can compete by quarters," Edelen said. I've done that before against teams that you were definitely an underdog against. I just want to compete better than we have the last two years against them.

"I don't want to tell our girls that we're not going to have a chance to win the game, because I don't want to tell this group of girls that in any measure, but there's definitely some things we have to do better, and we have to set some goals."

Chickasha has gotten better against the press this season, but Edelen said the press her team saw against Elgin is not the same type of pressure Anadarko will bring.

"The pressure that you see in the zone press and the things that are open are totally different than the things we're going to see against Anadarko with the way that they run their fly-switching, and the way that they do things out of a more man-to-man type set."

The Lady Chicks will play the Anadarko Lady Warriors at 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Chickasha High School Activity Center
