Summer begins with pool opening

As temperatures begin to touch triple digits, the Chickasha public pool in Shannon Springs has opened just in time to provide much needed relief from the heat.

The city-owned, YMCA-run pool opened last Thursday, and the deep end with two diving boards is expected to be open to swimmers by the end of this week, YMCA Executive Director Nathan Donald said.

"We try to open it around Memorial Day weekend," Donald said. "It's an older pool, so it took some time replacing a few parts and making sure it's clean and ready for swimmers."

Open swim occurs between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, when YMCA members can access the pool for free while non-members must pay $3 per person per day. In addition to an afternoon dip, the YMCA also offers programs through the pool.

"We offer swimming lessons in the morning and evening, as well as water aerobics at 6 p.m," Donald said.

Children as young as 6 months old up to 13 years old get two-weeks of instruction for $10. The youngest age group, six months to three years, focuses on adapting children to the water so they have an easier time learning to swim at a later age.

"It's a neat class, because you're teaching the to just be comfortable with the water," Donald said. "If you can get them comfortable with it at that age, they tend to learn to swim at a faster pace."

All programs at the pool can be applied for at the YMCA at 725 West Chickasha Ave. The organization also employs the pool lifeguards, and they are searching for more over the summer.

"We are looking for more lifeguards and we will offer a life guard class later this month at the Y," Donald said.
