Local teams enter playoff race

GRADY COUNTY —

Six of the seven high school football teams in the area clinched playoff spots last Friday, and the brackets leave some with a decent chance of lifting the state title.

5A, Chickasha (5-5) at Guthrie (10-0), at 7 p.m.

The Fightin' Chicks will play a postseason game for the first time in seven years when they travel to Guthrie this Friday. The Bluejays breezed through 5A District 2 with an undefeated record and are considered the favorites for the 5A state title. Chickasha does have some playoff pedigree in their system, however, with head coach Tom Cobble taking a fourth seed to the state semifinals or better on two occasions.

3A, Perkins-Tryon (5-5) at Blanchard (9-0)

Defending state champions Blanchard are the favorites to repeat their exploits this season, and the path will certainly be easier than in 2012 when they came in as the third seed. There will still be difficulties, however, and it could come as early as the round of sixteen. Should they beat Perkins, as expected, there could be a clash with local rivals Newcastle in the cards should the Racers (7-3) overcome Sulphur (5-5) this Friday.

3A, Tuttle (7-3) at Bethany (7-3), 7:30 p.m.

After losing to Blanchard, Tuttle has to settle for a third seed and a first round match up with Bethany. They stand a chance of copying Blanchard's efforts of last season when they too were a third seed and went all the way to win the state title. That will more than likely require overcoming undefeated Plainview (10-0) in the second round.

A, Velma-Alma (6-4) at Minco (9-1), 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs are coming off a great regular season performance that has been rewarded with a fairly straight forward bracket. Their first round opponents Velma-Alma enter the playoffs as the fourth seed after they lost 26-24 against Healdton last week. Jacob Overton is already being looked as as a player to watch for Minco after scoring 24 touchdowns in a variety of ways this season.
