In the Saddle with Seth Sturgeon

CHICKASHA — With 27 wins and three Top 25 opponents already out of the way, the Drovers are off to the best start in school history and are already knocking at the door of the school’s most wins, 37.

“Our goal right now is really just to make it to then national tournament,” senior pitcher Seth Sturgeon said. “If we can make it to that, we probably will have secured that goal of the most wins in school history.”

Sturgeon, who joined the Drovers in 2011 from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, said he wasn’t the pitcher he is today such a short time ago when Coach Mike Ross recruited him.

“(Coach Ross) took a chance on me. That first fall I was here, we re-hauled everything in my mechanics,” he said. “Beginning of March last season, it started coming together. I guess I figured it out. It’s been going pretty well since then.”

With an outstanding performance in the classroom as well as on the field, Sturgeon was named a Bill and Pat Smith Scholar-Athlete, an award that goes to just one male and one female athlete at USAO each season.

“I’m just blessed,” he said. “Mom instilled these kinds of goals in me when I was young. Grades come first, and then athletic stuff comes second … it’s the things I learn in school that will carry me throughout my life.”

After graduating in April and finishing up baseball in May, Sturgeon will jump straight into adulthood with plans to get married this summer and hopes of working for the Colorado Highway Patrol.

Drover fans can watch the interview with Seth Sturgeon at 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. Friday on local Channel 18.
